HERE’S WHAT’S UP: FALL

I have said it here before that one of my favourite things in the whole world is boiled fresh groundnuts with a ‘traditional’ smell. I think I said that too for coconut and for thisĀ marriageable fish soup. Ahh.
Imagine the joy in my soul when on Saturday, Mr N and I stumbled upon some in the farmer’s market. They kept calling our names so we bought two plastic bags of fresh groundnuts straight from the farm. Does life get any better than this? I couldn’t wait to get home and rapidly boil some and eat. That’s all I’ve been doing since then. Boil groundnuts. Eat. Repeat.
Except I also have other things to take care of like the kids and homeschool and meals and laundry and xhbghgjhhggygefghs. Excuse my Spanish. Anyone reading this who loves boiled groundnuts like me? Those nuts are golden.
It’s the season of fall! Which means my backyard and front yard are literally littered with leaves falling from the trees.
And today, the older girls decided to rake some of the leaves while their baby sister was asleep.
And then this happened.
It always happens when kids are involved.
In other news, a well-meaning reader of this blog criticised me for using an old pan to present ice cream. I replied by saying it was intentional because I have seen many top food bloggers use distressed props to present their food and I love it.
BUT I totally understand that not everyone may see that as presentable. BUT I love the character and element of storytelling old props bring to food photography and I feel drawn to that style of shooting food. Over the weekend, I bought this ancient-of-days pan from a thrift store, which I will show you in a recipe very soon.
I understand if you don’t get it. I’ll love to find out from you. Do you prefer old pans or new and shiny ones in food photos?
A couple of tragic accidents happened in Cameroon last week. My prayers are with the affected families. May everyone be comforted and find glimpses of light in the dark.

I love that photo of your daughter! I love the innocence in it.
Also this reminds me – I need to take a photo walk tomorrow and take photos of fallen leaves.
And to the reader that commented – my take is this: that’s a well-used pan, with lots of personal history that tells stories of good, yummy times in your family.

Aww, your girls are so beautiful Precious!! Just look at those rosy cheeks. Haha and I’ve got to applaud them for their diligence in raking the leaves. Go girls! I love boiled groundnuts but I think you’re the MVP right now. I prefer any type of pan jare as long as it’s photography worthy. š

I think presentation is what matters. Old or new doesn’t really matter but an antique lover will appreciate the uniquness in the old, which is your own unique blend of style.

Awww, your daughter’s so cute. Those groundnuts had my heart pumping fast. Love them too. We stumbled into the dry ones here, and we packed it like crazy. We sat on the floor and dug in to conquer. At a point, we looked like Winnie the pooh on the floor with his honey everywhere, stuffed and helpless. Lol. About distressed pans. They have character. They are earthy and beautiful. The idea of distressed items is to have a rustic feel, any accent or item put on or in them tends to look even prettier bcos unlike sparkling new pans, they don’t compete with the beauty of what you intend to showcase, which in this case is the ice cream. Just like the rustic table you use for recipes. I love them. My sitting room console is finely distressed on purpose.

I usually buy this in traffic step it down with chilled Pepsi. Old or new pan? Anything goes for me, as long as the presentation is fine and the food looks sweet (even if I no taste am).
