The Marriage Therapy

In marriage, love could become loveless. The euphoria of love that exists at the beginning of a couple’s relationship usually fades. It not only fades but it gives way to conflicts, twists and turns. Sometimes people wonder why they ever got married. This reminds me of the popular movie by Tyler Perry titled, “Why Did I get Married too?” Ever found yourself asking that question? Well, you are not alone. Many people find themselves asking this same question over and over again. Please continue…

That’s why the Bible says many waters cannot quench love, neither can the floods drown it. (Song of Songs 8:7) Many waters do come in marriage and if they haven’t come already, they will. The floods will come and it won’t be for a swimming spree. Some things could get drowned!

There are times a marriage gets sick and that is why I captioned this article, “The Marriage Therapy”. What do you do when your marriage is handicapped and is not going in the direction you expected?

Let me start by telling you what you should not do. Don’t regret getting married. Regret will only make you wallow in self pity, Instead of solving the problem, it will create more problems.

Forgive and forget! Easier said than done right? Yes, it’s difficult but not impossible. Holding onto old problems will only be opening up old wounds. LET GO AND LET GOD.

Don’t misuse your tongue. When we are angry we tend to want to say hurtful words to each other. If you really want to talk, wait until your anger fades. What you will say in a normal mood will be quiet different from what you will say while angry. Let your speech ALWAYS be seasoned with salt (Colossians 4:6).

What then is the marriage therapy? It is love that doesn’t depend on how well your partner treats you. It is love that makes you hug you partner even after they hurt you so bad. It is love that knows how to forgive even a multitude of sin.

Jesus asked, “And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that?” – Matthew 5:47. I ask, if you only show love to those who please you, what are you doing more than others. Is it not only ordinary to love only those who are pleasing to you.

There are the out-of-the ordinary things we do that make impact. Whenever, your marriage is in a crisis, see it as an opportunity to be extraordinary and show unconditional love. Cleave more to your spouse against the odds. While we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. He didn’t wait for us to change before making His sacrifice on the cross. He took the first step and so we should always take the first step in showing sacrificial love. LOVE IS THE ONLY KEY THAT OPENS EVERY DOOR.
