Rub butter on an 8 by 8 inch baking pan. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (180 degrees C).
In a bowl, mix together the sugar and butter until fluffy. Add the egg and milk then whisk together until just combined.
Add the cornmeal, flour, baking powder, and salt then fold in together with a spatula until just combined and no flour can be seen.
Pour the batter into prepared pan then use the spatula to level on top. Place in preheated oven to bake for 25-30 minutes until a toothpick inserted in the middle comes out clean.
