Ingredients Needed

  • Burger Patties: You will either need to purchase pre-shaped unseasoned burger patties or make your own using ground meat. Unseasoned is best since this recipe tells you how to season it!
  • White Onions: These types of onions have a sharp flavor that pairs well with silky cheddar, a juicy patty, and a soft burger bun. Their flavor improves when you cook them on the grill because it gives them a smoky flavor.
  • White Cheddar Cheese: White cheddar is an excellent melting cheese with a creamy mouthfeel and mild to bold flavor. It softens when you place it on a hot burger patty.
  • Burger Buns: You can use any type you wish! Classic burger buns, brioche buns, sesame buns, or even wheat buns are all fantastic options.

How To Make Grilled Onion Cheddar Burgers

With just a few simple steps, you can craft the perfect burger. Here is how to do so:

  1. Season both sides of each patty with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder.
  2. Grill the seasoned burger patties on medium heat, flipping halfway through cooking.
  3. Add the white cheddar cheese to each patty when they come off the grill.
  4. Grill onion slices for 2-3 minutes per side.
  5. Build burgers with meat, cheese, and onion slices; serve immediately.

Substitutions and Variations

Cooking is all about experimenting. Although this recipe is wonderful as it is, you can also change it up. Here are some ideas for you to try!

  • Onions: Instead of grilling the onions, you can try caramelized onions instead, which provide a natural caramelized sweetness that offsets the savory meat and seasonings. Another option is to use pickled onions if you prefer your burgers to have a tangy component!
  • Buns: If you wish, you can toast the buns. This way, when spreading mayo or other condiments on the bread, it doesn’t soften as quickly. Grilling them gives them a slightly crisp exterior and warms the inside of the bun while leaving gorgeous grill marks on them.
  • Additional Toppings: Feel free to add sliced avocado, fresh lettuce, grilled mushrooms, or any other toppings you enjoy. This recipe is a great foundation for building your own custom burger.

Expert Tips For Grilled Burgers

  • Don’t overcook the patties! They cook rather quickly on the grill, so keep an eye on them and make sure to flip them halfway through. If you overcook them, they will be tough, and all the juices will escape.
  • Make sure to preheat the grill before adding the patties. If you don’t, the meat will take longer to cook and might stick to the grill. Once you place the patties on the grill, they should sizzle, giving them a nice sear and ensuring even cooking.
  • If you are shaping the burger patties at home, be careful not to overwork the meat because it tightens its proteins. As a result, the burgers might shrink too much or turn rubbery when you cook them.
  • No grill, no worries! Make these grilled onion cheddar burgers in a grill pan instead.

Recipe Frequently Asked Questions

What Onion Is Best For Grilled Hamburgers?

White onions have a nice balance of astringency and sweetness, making them a good choice for burgers. However, you can generally substitute different onion types in recipes without much issue.

Red and white onions are often enjoyed in salads, salsas, or sandwiches because of their flavor and texture. Yellow onions are considered more all-purpose, so you can’t go wrong either way.

Should I Put Grilled Or Raw Onions On My Burger?

Ultimately, you can put either raw or grilled onions on your burger. However, like in this recipe, grilled onions have a delicious charred taste; they’re slightly softer, and their flavor is less sharp. You can use raw onions if you want something more pungent and crisp.

What Type Of Cheddar Is Best For Burgers?

You can use extra-sharp cheddar for these burgers if you prefer your cheese not to soften as much. However, I recommend using a mild or sharp cheddar for this recipe.

Mild cheddar is aged for a few months and has a creamy texture, while sharp cheddar is aged longer and has a bolder flavor but still softens.

You can choose either yellow or white cheddar based on your preference for color. In case you don’t have slices, you can sprinkle shredded cheddar on your burger too!
